[…] one key ingredient of economic growth: technological creativity. – The Lever of Riches, by Joel Mokyr.

This post is dedicated to the inventive people around the world, people who enjoy to build things, apparatus, devices,…People that strive for a better world, where people are creative and respected.

Joel Mokyr dedicated a great effort to elucidate the mechanism that may cause economic progress. He realized that the key ingredient is technological creativity [1]. For economist, technological advances gave to humanity the so-called “free lunch” {1} (Mokyr means “an increase in output that is not commensurate with the increase in effort and cost necessary to bring it about”) that everybody is seeking for, but in the current dark age, it is denied to us. His famous book entitled “The Lever of Riches: Technological Creativity and Economic Progress”, gives numerous counterexamples to this statement, and it is a fundamental text to read. According to Mokyr [1], in much occurrences we have access to very cheap lunches, but in history there is plenty of example of very expensive lunches that cost dead to many of us…Still quoting him:

Through most of history, however, societies have not been on the frontier, where they fully exploited their resources, but at a point inside it, where waste and inefficiency meant that living standards were lower than they would have been if the resources available had been deployed efficiently.

Economic growth can be achieved by means of 4 different processes:

  1. investment (increases in the capital stock at a rate faster than the labor force makes available to each worker more capital to work with and economic growth follows). This seems to be the general path followed by governments, but this implies to abstain to consume now in order to be able to consume in the future. Very costly.
  2. Commercial expansion. “An increase in the exchange of goods, services, labor, or capital can be beneficial for all partners involved” [1].
  3. Scale or size effects.
  4. Increases in the stock of human knowledge. This means technlogical progress and changes of institutions.

The choices I have made here are limited naturally, but the important is the general message. As an old saying goes: You can be, or have or to do anything you wish…provided you do your best to attain what you wish…
